The Prime Minister will later today announce his resignation following two days of humiliating departures by senior cabinet figures, later including those who replaced the first to leave, and dozens of other Tory officials.

Initial reports suggest he will remain in number 10 for some months to allow a Conservative Party leadership contest to take place.

This will determine the next Prime Minister of the UK.

But George Freeman MP, Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, has insisted that Mr Johnson should go now.
