Greg Hands says Tories to lose 1,000 seats at local elections

Local election results will be pouring in throughout the day, but the Tories’ fears of sweeping losses already appear to have been confirmed.

A total of 230 of 317 councils in England had seats up for grabs – 8,058 in total. The polls closed at 10pm on Thursday night, and with a number of wards counting votes overnight some 60 local authorities have already reported results.

The Conservatives are known to have lost 229 seats, Labour have gained 119 and the Liberal Democrats 62.

The Liberal Democrats have made significant gains, seizing control of Windsor and Maidenhead. Labour, meanwhile, took Plymouth, Stoke-on-Trent and Medway.

Another spate of election results are expected to come out at lunchtime, but you can use Express.co.uk’s live tracker below to keep an eye on the national picture throughout the day.
