The Conservative Party’s London Mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey told talkRADIO that Mr Khan’s record on crime is one of his biggest failures. Mr Bailey stated that the London Mayor must take more responsibility in tackling crime and look to make the police’s job easier.

Mr Bailey said: “It is too late for us to say crime is on the rise, it has been rising for some time.

“One of Sadiq Khan’s biggest failures has been to tackle crime.

“He simply has not taken responsibility for it and it has meant that the police’s job has become that much tougher.

“He is there leader, should be asking questions and giving clear guidance.

“He is not doing that, and it is a big part why crime has risen in London.”

Throughout Saturday Metropolitan police have been faced with the challenge of tackling thousands of anti-lockdown protests in the capital.

On Saturday afternoon large crowds of people gathered at Trafalgar Sqaure and Hyde Park to protest the latest social distancing restrictions imposed by the UK Government in a bid to combat the spread of coronavirus

Metropolitan Police Commander Ade Adelekan said regarding the protests in London: “I know there is great frustration to these regulations but they have been designed to keep everyone safe from what is a lethal virus.

“By flagrantly gathering in large numbers and ignoring social distancing, you are putting your health and the health of your loved ones at risk.”

He added: “Last weekend it was highly disappointing to see that a small minority of demonstrators targeted officers with violence.

“Some 15 officers were injured during this protest, with more than 32 arrests being made during the course of the day.

“I will not tolerate a repeat of this behaviour this weekend and officers will respond quickly to any scenes of violence.”

Earlier on Saturday the Met said regarding the Trafalgar Square protest: “Crowds in Trafalgar Square have not complied with the conditions of their risk assessment and are putting people in danger of transmitting the virus.

“This has voided their risk assessment and we have informed the event organisers they are no longer exempt from the regulations.

“We are now asking those in Trafalgar Square to leave. Officers will be engaging with crowds and informing them of this development.

“By leaving now, you can keep yourself safe and avoid any enforcement action being taken by officers.”
