Speaking to Radio 4’s World at One, Kirsty Buchanan slammed Brexit loyalists who have raised concerns over Remain campaigner Ms Truss taking over from key duties from Lord Frost, who resigned earlier this month. But despite her Remain position, the special adviser stressed Ms Truss has reformed her view on the European Union. Ms Buchanan notes Ms Truss has a “set of core beliefs” and love of Britain making her the right person to carry out Brexit.

In a passionate defence of the Foreign Secretary, Ms Buchanan said Ms Truss is “a very methodical politician” adding that she “is quite dispassionate when it comes to her approach to politics”.

The adviser went on to note that the “freedom loving Thatcherite” does not deserve the criticism she has recieved for being a former Remain campaginer, insisting Ms Truss has the experience to make a success of Brexit, particularly in the renegotiation of the Northern Ireland Protocol.

She insisted that, despite her vote in the 2016 Brexit Referendum, Ms Truss is in fact “a born again Brexiteer”.

The special adviser argued that her role as International Trade Secretary is evidence she is more than capable in the role.

Ms Buchanan said: “When she became the International Trade Secretary she unashamedly wrapped herself in the flag…

“And has unashamedly promoted Britain across the world in the trade deals that we have secured.”

She claimed it is these principles that have made Ms Truss “so popular with the grassroots” of the Conservative party.

Ms Buchanan added: “She loves her country, she is unashamedly proud of being British.

Alongside her new opinion on Brexit, Ms Buchanan insisted Ms Truss believes in “free market, freedom loving, libertarian values”.

The special adviser said this was something the European Union could not offer.

Ms Buchanan added how Ms Truss’s Britain “has always been a Britain that looks to Singapore, Hong Kong, to take its North Star from.”

Lord Frost resigned from his role earlier this month over his “disillusionment” at the direction the Conservative Party and Government was heading in.

The Foreign Secretary has warned she is not afraid to suspend the Protocol and trigger Article 16 if the EU does not listen to the demands of Britain.
