Barack Obama confession: Former US President admits Michelle ‘does not like politics’

Barack Obama discusses Michelle with Prince Harry in 2017

The former US president asserted his wife has no intentions of running for president, but added he would “support her” in her next goal in life. He made the remarks during an interview with Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.

Mr Obama said: “Michelle isn’t going to run for president. I can guarantee it.

“As I say in the book, she doesn’t like politics. Also she says it clearly in her own book, and without very much subtlety.”

He added: “That said, I am always happy to support her in what she needs, independently of whatever the next goal is, just as she does with me.”

Ms Obama, who was First Lady from 2009 to 2007, addressed the subject of life in the White House during an interview on Conan O’Brien’s podcast.

Mr O’Brian quizzed Ms Obama on anonymity, something she had addressed in her book Becoming.

In the title, she recalled sitting in her car eating Chipotle, something she could no longer do.

Ms Obama said: “What Barack and I talk about that we do miss…is the loss of anonymity.

“And that’s something that most people don’t understand, how valuable anonymity is.

“Being able to blend into your environment, and not be the centre of it, but just to observe it…and because I love people so much, I love casual conversations with people.

“While I loved my time in the car alone with Chipotle, I love what you learn standing in a grocery store line and overhearing someone’s conversation.

“You know, watching their interactions with their loved one.

“Not being the watchee, but watching, and taking that in and understanding life and the observations that come.”

Ms Obama also addressed her interactions with her husband following their years in the White House.

She said: “Most of your interaction with your partner is about what you saw, what you experienced over the course of the day.

“For Barack and I, that’s still very limited because we’re not able to be exposed in an anonymous way in the world.”

In her candid confession, the former First Lady added she and her family are now unable to live a normal life and that is why she would not like to run for a top job in the government.

She said: “I don’t live a normal life. I used to. Normal is very baked into me because of how I was raised, but I also know the life I’ve lived for the last 10 years is no longer normal.

“And so I don’t know as much as I would want to, to be in a position of leadership, to kind of know what are you feeling?

“Because you can’t experience life behind a tinted window in a car.”

Mr Obama’s claims about his wife come as reports emerged Donald Trump Jr is preparing for a future political career.
