BBC weather presenter Carole Kirkwood has experienced Britain’s washout weather first hand after the metrologist was caught in heavy flooding in London on Tuesday. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain in northeast England after torrential downpours hit London overnight. Ms Kirkwood described the rain as “horrendous” as she told BBC Breakfast the UK is set for further wet weather.

BBC presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent opened up the weather section with a discussion on the travel disruption in London brought on by flooding after heavy rain overnight.

Ms Kirkwood told BBC Breakfast: “I drove in that, it was horrendous it was coming down in stair rods!

“It is going to clear as we go through the course of this morning from the southeast.

“However we are going to hold onto it across Northern England.

“Where we also have some torrential downpours at the moment, particularly in the northeast.

“Gusty winds around all this rain, brisk winds at that.

“So it does feel cool if you are caught in it.

Pointing to the mass of rainclouds on the weather map, Ms Kirkwood explained the front was “pushing now into East-Anglia and the far southeast.”

She added: “We will see some of that rain sweep into southwest Scotland, eventually to the northeast.

“Northern Ireland catching one or two showers.

“And if you are driving through Cumbria, Lancastershire today some heavy rain.

“That getting in through parts of Wales as well.”

“The rain moving away though early this morning,” continued the metrologist.

“From the far south-east and behind it it will brighten up.

“We will see some sunshine.

“So there goes the rain but it continues across northern England, some of that fringing into parts of the midlands, moving up across eastern Scotland and still brisk winds around it.”
