Bill and Melinda Gates' divorce documents reveal the couple's marriage was "irretrievably broken" and the billionaires have no pre-nup agreement.
Legal parties say that Melinda, 56, filed for the divorce, and said that the "parties are separated", the Sun reports.
Documents say: "The marriage is irretrievably broken.
"We ask the court to dissolve our marriage and find that our marital community ended on the date stated in our separation contract."
There appears to be no pre-nuptial agreement but Melinda does not appear to be asking for spousal support from the Microsoft co-founder, one of the world's richest men who is worth an eye-watering $124 billion (£90 billion).
The former couple announced that they were getting divorced in a statement on Monday.
They have been married for more than 27 years and have three children – Jennifer, 25, Rory, 22, and Phoebe, 19.
Gates said they decided to end the marriage after a "great deal of thought and a lot of work".
He noted that they had raised "three incredible children" and worked to help people all over the world with their philanthropy work.
The billionaire wrote on Twitter: "We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.
"We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life."
Melinda posted an identical statement to her Twitter account.

It comes two years after Gates, 65, admitted that marital life was "really hard".
Their eldest child Jennifer commented on her parents' divorce on an Instagram story shortly after the statement was released.
She said: "I'm still learning how to best support my own process and emotions as well as my family members at this time and am grateful for the space to do so.

"I won't personally comment further on anything around the separation, but please know that your kind words and support mean the world to me."
Gates and Melinda met each other in 1987 when Melinda joined Microsoft.
She previously told The Sunday Times that being with her husband was often "incredibly hard" when they marked 25 years of marriage in 2019.
Melinda said: "When he was having trouble making the decision about getting married, he was incredibly clear that it was not about me, it was about: 'Can I get the balance right between work and family life?'"
The couple tied the knot in Lanai, Hawaii, on New Year's Day in 1994.
Gates is currently the fourth richest man in the world behind Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, entrepreneur Elon Musk and French businessman Bernard Arnault.
He has become a leading figure in the fight against Covid-19 and he and Melinda have donated billions through their philanthropic activities over the years.
