The bodybuilding-son of the millionaire property magnate who helped shape New York City has been arrested after allegedly shooting his parents.
Dino Tomasseti, 29, is accused of carrying out the crime on Christmas morning at his parents' £2.5 million Long Island mansion.
Rocco Tomassetti, 65, and wife Vinceta Marsicano-Tomassetti were shot – but survived – and their son used a Cadillac Escalade car to escape, police said.
He was arrested in New Jersey later that night and is currently awaiting extradition to New York from Nassau County.
Due to the way the county legal system works, he is currently being held on a charge of being a “fugitive from justice”, as any future charges will depend on the health of the personal trainer's parents.
The family business, headed by the late-Dino Tomassetti Sr. built some of New York City's most iconic buildings, such as the Goldman Sachs headquarters near Ground Zero, the Bank of America headquarters, and, more recently, the company provided the concrete for the Freedom Tower.
Police have not disclosed any reasoning behind the shooting, but the couple, both in their mid-60s, have undergone surgery for their wounds, the New York Post reports.
The father is reported to be in the most serious condition.
The couple's neighbours were “shocked” when the NYP contacted them for comment.
A resident said: “They’re lovely people. I don’t understand the whole thing.
“They’re very nice people. You couldn’t ask for better neighbours.
“That’s all I can tell you. They don’t bother you. They keep their house beautiful. They talk to you and say, ‘Can I help you with anything?’ They’re very fine people. I can’t say a bad word about them.
“I feel sorry for them. What else can you think? I feel very sorry for them. I hope they survive and come out of this.”
The couple have three children, twins Rocco and Dino, and daughter Gina, 24.
