A depraved killer murdered his ex-girlfriend and ate parts of her body in an act of violence that has shocked police and the courts.

Murderer Joseph Oberhansley, 39, used an electric saw to kill his ex-girlfriend, Tammy Jo Blanton, and admitted eating her heart and brains after.

The distributing crime took place in Jeffersonville, Indiana, in 2014 – but the killer has only just been found guilty of his crimes.

Oberhansley butchered his 46-year-old ex-girlfriend, killing her in cold blood, before dismembering her corpse in a bath.

Police found parts of the victim's skull on a dinner plate when they investigated the scene at the time.

Friends reported Ms Blanton as missing when she failed to turn up for work – with officers finding “blood everywhere” when they arrived at her home.

Clark County Circuit Court heard how the depraved killer used power tools to saw open his victim’s chest and skull – with prosecutors describing the scene as "worse than a horror movie”.

Prosecutor Jeremy Mull said: "She suffered so many indignities that night.

"She was terrified, she was stabbed, she was dismembered, she was eaten and she was raped.

"And the justice for each of those acts of indignities is important if it is proven. It’s what justice demands."

Oberhansley was found guilty of murder and burglary, but was acquitted of rape in the trial.

The killer had previously served 12 years behind bars in a Utah prison for killing his girlfriend and shooting his mother.

He turned the gun on himself following the earlier crime – but survived his injuries.
