China stokes WW3 fears as it rolls out long-range 500km missile launcher

The People's Liberation Army (PLA), China's military outfit, has reportedly positioned a sophisticated long-range rocket launcher at the Himalayas.

The move is thought to be due to, an ever increasing, battle of wills between China and neighbours India.

According to sources the strategy adopted by PLA was to sure up defences after failed talks in recent weeks between the two power houses.

According to the South Morning China Post, the PLA confirmed deployment of a missile to the border with India after an agreement between the two countries failed when discussing disputed borders.

Forces for the PLA positioned 5,200 metres above sea level in Xinjiang military district have reportedly ran drills using a rocket system.

While the PLA did not reveal the exact model of rocket there was confirmation the weapon was long-range with precision targeting ability, and had entered service in 2019.

In July 2020 media outlets in India reported that China had positioned rockets to the north-west and south-west of India.

These included the PHL-03 multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) and PCL-181 vehicle-mounted howitzers.

Experts said that the two weapons were not advanced enough and therefore no threat to India.

Song Zhongping, a former instructor in the PLA’s Artillery Corps, said: "The new weapon system should be a long-range rocket launcher that can carry multiple 300mm [12-inch] or even bigger rockets with more than 100km of firing range,

"Only a long-range MLRS is powerful enough to act as a deterrent to India, as the Indian troops are also stepping up military deployment along the borders."

In 2019 during China's National Day Parade Type PCL-191 was shown off to the world but its name was only disclosed a few months after by Chinese military magazine Modern Ships.

According to Modern Ships the modular rocket system of the PCL-191 is able to carry two 750mm Fire Dragon 480 tactical ballistic missiles, each with the potential to fly up to 500km.

In February China released video showing the battle between the Chinese and Indian troops over the Himalayan border that left 27 soldiers dead in June 2020.

The PLA confirmed for the first time that four of its soldiers were killed during the bloody border clash which was previously reported as violent brawls with attacks of "steel tubes, cudgels and stones".
