Moment Ukraine bomb obliterates Russian command post

A prominent Russian long-range bomber has been obliterated in a drone strike carried out in Russia.

According to Igor Sushko of the Wind of Change think tank, “the drones that destroyed the parked Russian Tu-22M3 strategic bombers were launched from inside Russia”.

Images of the incident have surfaced on social media. They depict a Tupolev Tu-22 aircraft engulfed in flames at the Soltsy-2 airbase, situated south of St. Petersburg.

An official statement from Moscow indicates that a drone was targeted by small-caliber firearms, though it still managed to cause some level of damage to an aircraft.

Ukraine has refrained from issuing any comments on the matter.

Its capability to travel at twice the speed of sound, has been extensively employed by Russia for launching attacks on Ukrainian cities.

The Russian Ministry of Defence released a communication stating that the incident, involving an assault by a “copter-type UAV,” occurred approximately at 10am Moscow time (08:00 BST).

The Ministry said: “The UAV was detected by the airfield’s observation outpost and was hit with small-arms fire.

“One airplane was damaged; there were no casualties as a result of the terrorist act.”

Destroying one aircraft might not weaken Moscow’s fleet of 60 much, but this operation shows that Kyiv can now hit targets far inside Russia.
