El Chapo insider gunned down as cartel assassins catch baby in deadly crossfire

A key member of El Chapo's inner circle has been gunned down in a violent attack where hitmen shot at him at least 50 times and injured a baby.

The brutal attack targeted Ignacio Paez Soto, 47, on Boxing Day in Caborca, Mexico, as he left a convenience store heading back to his car.

It is claimed Paez Soto was one of the key operators in the Sinaloa Cartel run by El Chapo, real name Joaquin Guzman.

He was accompanied by an unnamed woman and her eight-month-old daughter who were inside his vehicle at the time of his murder.

The baby was struck and injured in one of her arms during the shocking incident and is being treated at a local hospital.

The woman was reportedly not shot but still required medical attention after suffering a nervous breakdown.

Paez Soto had previously been arrested in 2014 on weapons charges and was later sentenced to 20 years in prison for drug trafficking in 2016.

According to Spanish newspaper NIUS, Paez Soto was supposed to be in prison at the time of his assassination, but it is unclear why he was not in police custody.
