Passengers were plunged into “complete darkness” without food or working toilets after an overhead power cable fell onto their train.
The Eurostar was set to travel from London St. Pancras to Amsterdam after leaving the station at 8.16am this morning. However, it never made it to its destination after people were left trapped in their seats for almost eight hours without power.
Passenger Debbie Cleary tweeted: “Our train – the 0816 – from St Pancras to Amsterdam has been stuck now for over 7 hours. We are in almost complete darkness, no food, no drinks, toilets are overflowing…. How can this be ok?”

Eurostar confirmed the issue was due to a fallen overhead cable at the entrance to the Channel Tunnel. After more than seven hours, the train headed back to London.
Eurostar spokesperson told the Daily Star: “An overhead cable has fallen on the 08:16 Eurostar train, between London and Amsterdam, at the entrance of the Channel Tunnel. There are around 700 passengers and crew on board who are confirmed to be safe.

“Following a complicated situation due to the position of the train and the track infrastructure, it’s meant that certain safety procedures had to be adhered to before we could move the train. The train is currently in the process of being brought back to London.
“All affected passengers on board will be met in London with refreshments and will receive enhanced compensation. Eurostar are sorry for issues caused that customers have experienced today.”
However, passenger Stuart Haggas claims this was not the case. He said no one was there to meet them with refreshments.
He tweeted: “Back at St Pancras where Eurostar ES9114 departed 8hr+ ago – after spending whole day on a cold train with no food, water, power, working toilets… is there a welcome of hot tea & apologies by Eurostar staff? No, to add insult to injury only one escalator working = more chaos”.
