Fatal police shooting in Commerce City under investigation

Officers from multiple jurisdictions were involved in a fatal police shooting in Commerce City Wednesday morning.

Officers from the Denver Police Department and the Colorado Department of Corrections Fugitive Apprehension Team were searching for a person wanted in connection with a violent crime, according to a Commerce City Police Department news release.

Officers contacted the man at 11:17 a.m. outside the Highland Legends Apartments on the 7100 block of Quebec Street. The Denver and corrections fugitive team asked Commerce City for backup in apprehending the suspect, who was armed with a handgun, the news release said.

Shots were fired in the 7100 block of Poplar Street, which is near the apartment complex, the news release said. Commerce City police did not specify whether the suspect shot at officers.

The man was hit multiple times and died at 12:09 p.m. at University Hospital.

Police released no additional information, citing an active investigation.
