GB News’ lead presenter Dan Wootton has accused French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel of “damning” the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab. Mr Wootton launched into a furious rant against the two EU leaders on his GB News prime-time slot. He said that “millions of elderly vulnerable people in the developing world and badly-hit countries are at risk of death” because Mr Macron and Ms Merkel “took anyway their choice of the AstraZeneca vaccine”.

In January, French President Emmanuel Macron claimed the AstraZeneca vaccine was “quasi-ineffective” for over-65s.

A number of EU countries also suspended the use of the jabs or limited its use to older age groups following stories about the risk of blood clots.

One UK Government official told Politico that EU leaders “who trashed the AstraZeneca vaccine have blood on their hands”.

The official added: “We now know what we all suspected is true, that they did it out of spite for Britain because of Brexit.”

“When the history books are written, they’ll say these people were directly responsible for the deaths of thousands in developing countries who won’t take AZ because of their anti-vaxx scare stories.”

Mr Wootton shamed Mr Macron in particular, saying that he let his “anti-Brexit rhetoric” interfere with public medicine.

He told GB News viewers: “The greatest gift the UK has given to the world over the course of this pandemic is the low-cost AstraZeneca vaccine.

“But, the countries currently ravaged by Covid, including those in Africa, or locked down by constant outbreaks, like in Australia, have been inexplicably rejecting the use of the UK jab, or limiting it to older age groups.

“Given the desire to vaccine populations en masse, what on earth is going on?

“Well, President Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel started the snowball effect of a lack of faith in the Oxford vaccine that seems to have damned it to long-term failure.

“New research from the Lancet shows it is as safe as the Pfizer vaccine in a study of more than a million people.

“Was all of this doing down of the British jab because of Brexit?”

He added: “I think millions of elderly vulnerable people in the developing world and badly-hit countries at risk of death had the right to choose the AstraZeneca vaccine – a choice taken away from them by pathetic anti-Brexit rhetoric interfering in medicine.

“Shame on Macron, whose own stunt backfired so badly he is now considering mandatory vaccines for every citizen. So much for French liberty!”

This comes as both Germany and France rush to crack down on the spread of Covid and ramp up vaccinations.

France has recently made a health pass compulsory to visit a cafe, board a plane, or travel on an inter-city train.

Meanwhile, Germany has officially entered the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the country’s disease control agency.
