Gran left with 74p in bank and unable to feed her grandkids after Asda error

A grandmother has been left with only 74p in her bank account and is unable to feed her grandchildren following an Asda blunder.

Mum-of-three and grandmother of five, Maria Sholder has placed three orders for home delivery with the retail giant over the last two weeks.

None of the orders had arrived, and she hasn’t received a refund – leaving her £347 out of pocket.

The 48-year-old from Sunderland suffers from MRSA, a type of bacterial infection that's resistant to several widely used antibiotics – leaving her unable to shop in person.

Maria has two children and two grandchildren staying with her during half term but has had to send them home early because she has nothing to feed them, ChronicleLive reports.

She placed her first order for home delivery on October 13 but when it didn’t arrive Maria said staff put it down to "technical problems".

"I rang up and they said there had been a technical problem with my order. The money had been taken out but I was told I would be refunded my money but I'm still waiting," she said.

"When I reordered my shopping (on October 26) it came up with an error so I got in touch to see if there was something wrong with the card but the money was taken out."

Maria then placed a third order on October 27, but after speaking to Asda she was told the grocery list for her order had got lost.

She added: "I was told the paperwork for my order had got lost but that my money would be refunded again.

"I've got 74p left in my bank and I've got nothing left to eat in the house.

"I'm disabled so I can't go to the shops and get shopping by myself and I have two children and two grandchildren here with me. I've got nobody to do these things for me.

"I've had to send my grandchildren home, I just don't know what I'm going to do.

"I'm really stressed, I just don't know what to do as I'm still waiting for my money back."

Maria confirmed she finally received delivery on Friday morning – 17 days after placing the order with Asda.

An Asda spokesperson told the Daily Star all of the refunds has been processed by Asda, and the problem is with her bank not releasing the funds.

They added: "We are sorry that we had to cancel Maria's deliveries but we are pleased that she has now received her full order and we have processed the refunds for all of her missed deliveries.

"If customers have any issues receiving funds they should contact their banking provider in the first instance.''
