Prince Harry and Megan Markle are aiming to "get as much attention as possible" in their upcoming Oprah Winfrey interview, a royal expert has said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have since set up home in Santa Barbara, California, the US, where they live with their one-year-old son Archie Mounbatten-Windsor.

It was revealed just after Valentine’s Day that their split from the Royal Family is permanent and the couple will no longer be allowed to serve in the Queen’s name.

Following the announcement, US chat show host Oprah, who is a friend of Meghan's, said the pair will appear on a special episode of her show.

The episode is due to air on March 7, and will discuss their life in the spotlight, the monarchy and making their new home in California.

Harry and Meghan’s appearance has been met with criticism from some who claim the couple are contradicting their wish for privacy, which they said was a key reason they chose to step down as senior members of the Royal Family.

Speaking on True Royalty TV’s The Royal Beat podcast, Robert Jobson, a royal author who has documented Diana, Prince William, and Kate Middleton, for years, said Meghan and Harry’s "real reason" for choosing to talk "about their private life" is to “boost their brand” in America.

Mr Jobson said: "Let's be clear, the reason they are doing Oprah is to boost their brand and get as much attention as possible because that is the power of the buck.

"The reason they are talking about their private life is because they need to make sure their brand is high and highly visible in America."

Although the interview has already been recorded, and is currently being edited, Prince William has reportedly been told nothing about the content of the programme and is not planning on watching it.

A royal "source" told the Mail on Sunday: “Harry and William have not spoken for some time, and Meghan speaking about their relationship or relationships with the Royal Family to Oprah will not help matters.

“Things are still bad between them, although both want to repair that brotherly bond.”

According to the insider, none of the Royal Family have any idea what Harry and Meghan said to Oprah.

“They will find out at the same time as everyone else…although I doubt they’ll watch it,” they added.

The interview will come a week after Prince Harry's sit down bus-top chat with James Corden, who hosts the Late Late Show.

In the interview, the Duke of Sussex poked fun at his former royal life however, and made a few jokes at the way the monarchy is run, and what it's like to be a royal.

Harry even revealed that it was the first time in his life that he'd been on a tourist open-top bus as he "wasn't really allowed to".

Speaking on the restrictions of royal life, he said: "You’re not really allowed to go on them, I always saw them in London, I always saw them touring because when you live in an area you never actually go sightseeing.

“I’ve always wanted to go sightseeing, this is the first chance I’ve had to see L.A."

The Daily Star contacted representatives for Prince William and Prince Harry for comment on the reports.
