Harry had dead birds in each hand when asking Queens permission to marry Meghan

Prince Harry was 'holding dead birds in each hand' when he asked Queen's permission to marry Meghan, he has revealed.

The Duke of Sussex spilled in the beans on his nervy exchange with Her Majesty following a hunt, in his new book, Spare.

According to his memoir, the conversation took place at the back of his grandmother's Range Rover, while he clutched the still warm creatures, and she had just sent the hunting dogs into her car.

He says when he turned to his 'granny' he was met with a frown, and appearing to be waiting impatiently to hear what he had to say.

In his book he says: "Did she recognise that I was afraid? Of both the request for permission and of Her Majesty? Did she realise that, no matter how much I loved her, I was often nervous in her presence?"

He added that her face radiated "out with it".

Detailing the following awkward conversation, he says he coughed before saying: "Granny you know I love Meg very much, and I’ve decided that I would like to ask her to marry me, and I’ve been told that, er, that I have to ask your permission before I can propose."

The Queen responded: "You have to?"

Prince Harry replied: "Um. Well, yes, that’s what your staff tell me, and my staff as well. That I have to ask your permission."

Harry says he then stood "as motionless as the birds" in his hands, trying to get a read on her facial expression before she said: "Well, then I suppose I have to say yes."

He says the wording of her permission caused him to question whether she actually wanted to say yes in this instance.

"I didn’t get it. Was she being sarcastic? Ironic? Deliberately cryptic? Was she indulging in a bit of wordplay?," he says.

He added that he then spent a period of time squinting, smiling and asking himself over and over: "What is the Queen of England saying to me right now?"

"At long last I realised: She’s saying yes, you muppet! She’s granting permission," he said.

"Who cares how she words it, just know when to take yes for an answer.

"So I spluttered: 'Right. OK, Granny! Well. Fabulous. Thank you!'"
