At least 32 people have been killed and at least 100 others injured after a ferry caught fire with passengers inside.
The vessel inferno began early on Friday morning while traveling through a river in Bangladesh's Jhalokati district about 200 km south of the capital Dhaka.
Local police chief Moinul Islam told AFP that the death count may continue to rise, saying: "The three-storey Obhijan 10 caught fire mid-river. We have recovered 32 bodies. The death count may rise. Most died from the fire and a few by drowning after they jumped into the river"
The fire began in the engine room of the MV Abhijan-10 boat, which was departing Dhaka and was traveling to the the southern district of Barguna.
Many of the 500 passengers saved themselves by jumping in the river after the fire broke out, according to the Bangladeshi Daily Star.
A survivor said: "There were around 500 passengers including children and elderly. Many of them jumped in the river and were able to swim across".
"I caught a burning smell and came out of VIP cabin to find out that there was a fire. Me, my wife and brother-in-law then jumped in the cold water and swam to the bank."
Last night's blaze is one of several similar incidents to strike recently in the South Asian nation.
