James Bulger’s dad fears son’s killer has had taxpayer-funded plastic surgery

James Bulger’s dad fears one of his son’s killers has had plastic surgery to give the “monster protection with a new face”.

Jon Venables was jailed alongside Robert Thompson after the chilling murder in Liverpool 1993.

The duo – aged 10 at the time of the crime – were freed on licence with lifelong anonymity, but Venables is back in jail for possession of child abuse images.

It emerged on September 28 that he has been denied parole, and will have to wait another two years before reapplying.

James' dad Ralph Bulger wrote to the probation and parole services before the hearing and demanded to know about any plastic surgery.

He told the Daily Mirror: “Taxpayers’ money should not be spent giving a monster protection with a new face.”

Mr Bulger heard that Venables wanted to be out by Christmas, and is furious at still being banged up.

He added: “My child never saw a Christmas beyond his second birthday and I hope Venables rots in his cell for the rest of his days.”

The 54-year-old continued: “I’ve always believed Venables will kill another child again if he is allowed back into the community.

“So much money has been thrown at him for nearly 30 years and yet he will always be a dangerous, predatory killer.

"There are plenty of great causes to spend public money on to help people – changing Venables’ face is not one of them.”

Venables, 38, was jailed for 40 months in 2018.

Sentencing him at the time, Mr Justice Edis said: “The children depicted were often very young and vulnerable, there is discernible pain and distress suffered.”

As he has a life licence, Venables cannot be freed until the Parole Board recommends it.

The Ministry of Justice declined to comment when approached by Daily Star Online.
