A famous American filmmaker claims he has uncovered the truth about the assassination of John F Kennedy — and says what he has learned isn’t a conspiracy theory but a "conspiracy fact".
Oliver Stone, who has recently worked on documentaries about Guantanamo Bay and Edward Snowden, made the revelation this week after speaking to historians, forensics experts and people involved in the case for his new film.
His documentary on the mysterious killing of the 35th president of the United States, entitled ‘JFK Revisited’, will be released next Friday (November 26)
It is the follow-up to his Oscar-winning 1991 feature film ‘JFK’, which imagined the events surrounding a cover-up by American intelligence agencies.
The official US government version of events states that the President was killed by 24-year-old Lee Harvey Oswald on 22 November 1963 when he fired three shots from the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas, Texas.
Oswald was mysteriously murdered two days later, and is reported to have told investigators that he was set up to commit the crime
But Mr Stone now believes JFK was killed in a "coup d’état" by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and co-conspirators.
He said: "There was, in my opinion, a coup d’état against a young president who was trying, in small steps, to change the face of things in this country.”
The director adds that this was something that many Americans suspected in the aftermath of the shocking killing:
“When you murder a US president in broad daylight in front of the whole world, people sensed right away there were larger forces than one man at work.”
“The original evidence would never hold up today. It would be thrown out of court on day one.”
The success of Mr Stone's first film in 1991 had a huge influence over American public opinion, and led to the passing of the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992, which demanded that all public records concerning the assassination would be released at a future date.
Current US President Joe Biden postponed the release of remaining records this year, citing the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason.
