Royal fans have said they are ‘completely lost’ after watching Prince Harry and Meghan Markle pick up a civil rights award from the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP).

They were awarded the NAACP 2022 President’s Award at a ceremony last night for helping with “social justice and have joined the struggle for equity” around the world.

It was the first time Meghan and Harry had been seen by the public at an event this year with the couple personally accepting the award.

Before they began their speech, Harry took the time to acknowledge the people of Ukraine, who “urgently need our continued support.”

As they collected the award, Meghan said: "Our lives were brought together for a reason".

Although the NAACP gave reasons behind the award, many royal fans were still after more details.

One user said: “No one ever said what Harry and Meghan did for Black America to deserve the award. This apparently IS all about image.”

Many others were questioning why the couple had been chosen for the award with one saying “What, if anything, did they achieve to present them with any award?”.

Another said they were “completely lost” by the former working royals being given an award.

However, the awards confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were recognised for their promotion of Covid-19 vaccine equality, aid to a Texas women’s shelter and partnership to create community relief centres.

In a statement, NAACP President Derrick Johnson said: "We’re thrilled to present this award to Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who together have heeded the call to social justice and have joined the struggle for equity both in the US and around the world.

"Not only do they continue to lead by example, the Duke and Duchess have also decided to inspire the next generation of activists through the NAACP-Archewell Digital Civil Rights Award, ensuring the support and recognition of generations of civil rights leaders to come."

As well as those questioning the decision, many of the couple’s fans were delighted.

One fan on Twitter said: “I love their speech! Congratulations Harry and Meghan. So well deserved!”

As another commented: “Both he and Meghan do a lot of charity work in the US and in Africa. He said Princess Diana inspired his love for charity work and he is very protective of Meghan and their two mixed race children. Congratulations to them!”
