A man has been arrested and charged with his wife's murder nine months after she went missing in Chula Vista, California, after allegedly planning to use 'spellcasters' to trap her in their home.

40-year-old Larry Millete had been a person of interest in May Millete's disappearance since July.

Larry was also charged for possessing a semiautomatic rifle which is illegal in California, San Diego County’s district attorney Summer Stephan said on Tuesday.

Chula Vista police chief Roxana Kennedy said in the press briefing that investigators had followed up on 130 tips and conducted 87 interviews.

They suspect that May's disappearance is related to the fact she was planning on getting a divorce.

Stephan said that the "triggering event" was a phone call May had with a divorce attorney on January 7, her last ever call. Shortly after the call, Larry sent a text saying he was “shaking inside and ready to snap”.

Her phone was last active the next day and the couple's three young children haven't seen her since.

Stephan also explained that Larry was planning on getting so-called 'spellcasters' to break May's bones so that she could not leave the house.

“Larry was trying to hold on to May and he resorted to contacting what are called ‘spellcasters,’” she said.

“He was asking for May to become incapacitated, to be in an accident and have broken bones so that she could stay at home, thus displaying his homicidal ideations harm May”.

Larry had vehemently denied any involvement, but May's sister and brother-in-law, Maricris and Richard Drouaillet, pushed police to investigate him.

Kennedy praised the couple on Tuesday as they had ”rallied around her family and helped keep May’s disappearance in the spotlight”.

Police are still searching for May's body and her family has appealed for help.

Larry is expected to go before a judge on Thursday.
