Man kept brother’s rotting corpse for months as ‘he was scared of being lonely’

A man lived with his brother's rotting corpse for months so had he someone to talk to.

Concerned neighbours made the shocking discovery that Andrey, 42, had died and had been left lying on his sofa when they checked up on the brothers after not seeing them for a while,

Next door neighbour Albina said she was hit by a "horrific stench" the moment they entered the house in Novomoskovsk, central Ukraine.

Surviving older brother Valeriy explained he could not bear to bury his beloved brother who is presumed to have suffered a heart attack when he died suddenly last autumn.

Instead, the 52-year has treated Andrey's decomposing skeleton as though he is still alive by chatting away to him for several months "because he did not want to be lonely".

Neighbour, Albina told local media: "When we walked into the house we felt a horrific stench. A human figure was lying on the couch. It was covered with a blanket.

"When we threw the blanket aside, we saw a rotting human skeleton. Valeriy slept and had a meal near the decomposing corpse for several months.

"He treated his brother as if he was alive, continuing to talk to him. He said he was afraid of loneliness."

To slow down the body's decay process, neighbours claim Valeriy endured a freezing winter at home without the heating on.

Another neighbour, Oleksiy, said: "The window in their house was ajar all winter. I was wondering, are they hot or something."

After calling the police, officers took the corpse to the morgue with a proper burial to be held at the expense of the state, according to local media.

Hanna Starchevska, the police spokeswoman for the Dnipropetrovsk region police department commented: "The man lived with the corpse of his brother for four months.

"During a superficial examination, no signs of violent death were found on the body.

"According to the current version, the victim died of natural causes.

"Examinations to determine the exact causes of death are underway."

Neighbours said that the unemployed brothers quietly led a simple life of relaxing over alcoholic drinks together.
