Meghan Markle and Prince Harry risk looking like “spoiled elites” if they fail to pull-off their multi-million dollar Netflix deal, a brand expert has claimed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who live in California with their son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, announced their £112million deal with the US streaming giant back in September 2020.

Prince Harry and Meghan said they plan to make a series of documentaries, films and educational children programmes with Netflix, in what is their biggest money-making move since Megxit.

Eric Schiffer, a brand and reputation management expert, told Daily Star Online the lucrative deal comes with "problematic pressure" for the couple’s brand.

Mr Schiffer, who is chairman of Reputation Management Consultants, said the pair will be expected to "produce results" to prevent them from "looking like spoiled elites."

He said: "The multi-million dollar deal comes with problematic pressure for Meghan and Harry's brand to produce results to prevent looking like spoiled elites not up for the challenge."

If the content the couple produce is successful, the deal will make Meghan and Harry celebrities in Hollywood the same way partnerships with the US streaming giant made Michelle and Barack Obama.

The Obamas brokered a deal with Netflix alongside their company, Higher Ground Productions, after the former US President left office in 2018.

In the same year, Shonda Rhimes, who created hits like Grey's Anatomy and Scandal, left her position at ABC to move to Netflix.

Mr Schiffer said: "The deal makes Meghan and Harry celebrities in Hollywood the same way Netflix partner deals have with the Obamas and Shonda Rhimes.

"This epic-scale deal got Meghan and Harry what they could not have done without each other – they achieved the holy grail of celebrity elitism in Hollywood."

  • Queen 'made the mistake' of treating Meghan Markle like a 'routine royal'

The brand expert claims any idea of a reality show would "decimate" Meghan and Harry's brand and any "sophistication" they have left since stepping down from the Royal Family.

He said: "In terms of a reality show, this would decimate any semblance of the couple’s sophistication that has dwindled since they left Buckingham Palace."
