Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton’s flower girl dress row explained

In an bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle took the opportunity to set the record straight about a situation which happened with her sister-in-law Kate Middleton.

The Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge reportedly had a disagreement over flower girl dresses ahead of the Royal Wedding in May 2018.

At the time it was reported that the former Suits actress had left Kate in tears over her demands for Princess Charlotte’s dress.

It was claimed an emotional Kate ended up weeping after a “stressful” dress fitting just weeks before Meghan and Harry’s wedding.

However, in the Oprah interview, Meghan claimed “the reverse happened”, and that it was actually her that was crying.

But Meghan didn’t want to go into further details on what happened, because Kate apologised.

At the Royal Wedding in 2018, Princess Charlotte was one of the flower girls alongside Meghan’s goddaughters Rylan and Remi Litt, best friend Jessica Mulroney’s daughter Ivy and Prince Harry’s goddaughters Zalie Warren and Florence van Cutsem.

The dress fitting took place in November that year, and insiders claimed the pressure of Meghan’s “demands” were getting too much for Kate.

An insider told the Daily Telegraph at the time: “What actually happened was that the dress itself did not fit Kate's then nearly three-year-old daughter."

The source claimed that Meghan and Kate fell out because Princess Charlotte’s dress didn’t fit, meaning further fittings would need to be scheduled.

The insider added: “Kate had only just given birth to her third child, Prince Louis, and was feeling quite emotional.”

While it was initially reported that Kate was in tears, Meghan said the opposite happened.

When asked about the situation by Oprah, Meghan said: “A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining – yes, the issue was correct – about flower girl dresses, and it made me cry, and it really hurt my feelings.”

Meghan was shocked that she was blamed for the situation, and that “everyone in the institution knew it wasn’t true”.

She added: “I am not sharing that piece about Kate to be in any way disparaging about her. I would hope that she would want that to be corrected.”

Meghan didn’t want to go further into details, but made it clear that the incident was a major “turning point”.
