Nazi Secretary of Evil, 97, says sorry for first time over horrors inflicted

An infamous Nazi has broken her silence, more than 70 years after being involved in the slaughter of 10,000 Jews.

Irmgard Furchner was known as the Secretary of Evil because of her role in dealing with communications given by the commander of the Sutthof concentration camp in Poland.

She was under 21 at the time, so the now 97-year-old is being treated as a juvenile for her crimes.

Despite claiming no knowledge of the murders aims of the camp, her late husband gave testimony in 1954 claiming that she did in fact know about Jews being placed into gas chambers at the camp.

However, she has no told the Itzehoe Regional Court that she was sorry for what happened.

She said, this week, of her time at the camp from 1943 to 1945: "I am sorry about everything that happened.

"I regret that I was at Stutthof at that time."

Her lawyers requested her acquittal, arguing that the evidence hadn't shown beyond doubt that Furchner knew about the systematic killings at the camp, meaning there was no proof of intent as required for criminal liability.

Prosecutors accused Furchner of being part of the apparatus that helped the Nazis Stutthof camp function during the Second World War.

In their closing arguments last month, they called for her to be convicted as an accessory to murder and given a two-year suspended sentence.

German law states that anyone who helped the Nazis carry out their murderous slaughter of six million Jews during the war – even if it was not directly at a concentration camp – will be help responsible as an accessory to crime commuted during that time.

Many of those prosecuted in recent years are approaching 100 years old.

Furchner is the first woman to be tried in Germany for Nazi-era crimes in decades, and a verdict will be reached on December 20.
