A plane has crashed on to the A40 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

The light aircraft was forced to make a shock emergency landing on the dual carriage way during rush hour this evening (Thursday, August 10) shortly before 6pm.

Gloucestershire Police have asked people to avoid the area. The force confirmed it has officers at the scene, with the ambulance and fire services also present.

It is understood people were seen exiting the aircraft and making it to safety. Nobody was injured and no cars were hit by the plane.

Photos from the scene show a yellow-coloured light aircraft on the A40 Golden Valley Bypass central reservation, near Gloucestershire Airport in between Gloucester and Cheltenham.

The exact reason as to why the plane was forced to land on the dual carriageway is yet to emerge.

Traffic was backed up in both directions, although the cars now appear to have been cleared while emergency services deal with the incident.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix reports: "A40 in both directions closed due to police incident from A417 (Elmbridge Court Roundabout) to M5 J11 (Gloucester / Golden Valley Bypass). Traffic is coping well.

"Affecting traffic between Cheltenham and Gloucester."

The latest images from the scene show trucks being used to clear the plane.

Gloucestershire Police said in a statement: "We were called shortly before 6pm today (Thursday) with a report a light aircraft had landed on the A40 Golden Valley.

"No-one was injured and it is understood that no other vehicles were involved. Police remain at the scene at this time."
