Willing passengers will be weighed at Auckland International Airport in a measure a popular airline deems “essential” to ensure “the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft.” Gaining knowledge about the average weight of passengers is expected to enhance fuel efficiency in upcoming travel times, it said. Air New Zealand hopes by weighing passengers they will create a representative sample of its flyers.
In 2021, Air New Zealand justified its decision to weigh domestic passengers in New Zealand by stating: “Now that international travel is back up and running, it’s time for international flyers to weigh in.”
Alastair James, a load improvement specialist for the airline, said: “We know stepping on the scales can be daunting.
“We want to reassure our customers there is no visible display anywhere. No one can see your weight – not even us!
“By weighing in, you’ll be helping us fly safely and efficiently every time.”

Air New Zealand has assured passengers that their data will be recorded and stored anonymously, and no specific weight figure will be displayed on the scales.
James, a representative of the airline, explained that knowing the weight of all items on board an aircraft is a “mandatory requirement” set by regulations.
Currently, cargo and onboard meals are already weighed during flights, and collecting additional data will assist Air New Zealand in efficiently planning fuel for their fleet of 104 operating aircraft.
Prior to the pandemic, the airline served approximately 17 million passengers annually, operating 3,400 flights per week.
The airline aims to involve around 10,000 passengers in the survey conducted at Auckland International Airport between May 29 and July 2.

Air New Zealand has previously requested passengers to be weighed before boarding their flights.
In 2021, domestic passengers participated in a survey, while the survey for international travelers was postponed due to the pandemic.
Individuals who may be selected to participate in the survey are those who are traveling on the direct flight from Auckland to New York City’s JFK Airport.
Last autumn, Air New Zealand introduced their flagship 17-hour route from Auckland to New York’s JFK airport, ranking among the world’s longest flights.
The current longest flight in the world is operated by Singapore Airlines, covering the distance from Singapore to New York’s JFK, spanning 9,537 miles with a flight time of 18 hours and 50 minutes.
