Princess Diana was "consumed" by thoughts she might die in the months leading up to the car crash in Paris that claimed her life, according to a new bombshell documentary.
On July 15 in 1997, Diana was dealt a tragic blow where her friend the Italian designer Gianni Versace was shot dead in Florida, as revealed in Diana: Her Last Summer on Channel 5 tonight.
The documentary takes a close look at the chaotic events that marked the final months of Diana's life, including the personal loss of her close friend.
Just five days after Versace’s death, Diana took her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, to stay with their father Prince Charles, who she had recently divorced, at Balmoral in Scotland.
The next day, she travelled to Milan for Versace's memorial service.
Footage shows Princess Diana sitting at the front row with Elton john on her left and Sting on her right.
"It deeply moved her," reveals Paul Burrell, who served as Diana’s butler between 1987 and 1997.
He added: "This is only months before she’d die herself and here she was sat at Gianni’s funeral, she couldn’t quite comprehend it.

"Death seemed to haunt her towards the end go her life, she was so consumed by thinking it might happen to her."
Tragically, the next time Diana’s celebrity friends gathered like this was at her own funeral, on September 6.
Shortly before his death, Versace described Diana as "serene" when he last saw her, in an interview with Vanity Fair.
He said: "It is a moment in her life, I think when she’s found herself — the way she wants to live."
This comes after a recent photo of Princess Charlotte got royal fans in a frenzy – saying the young royal was the spitting image of her grandmother Princess Diana.
It recently emerged that Diana and Sarah Ferguson once snuck away from a boring event at Balmoral Castle to party with the staff, according to Diana's personal chef.
