A pub sited just a few miles from Peppa Pig World in Hampshire has been forced to ban children after a “rowdy” group made Father’s Day “unbearable”.
The Compass Inn is billed as “the most dog-friendly pub in the New First” but the cosy boozer’s welcome no longer extends to the under-twelves.
Mop Draper, who has been landlady of the popular pub for 26 years used to say: “You can come to the Compass in your wellies, and you can come in with your dog, it doesn’t really matter …we welcome everyone.”
But after receiving complaints about a group of “rowdy children” on Father’s Day she has decided enough is enough.
She told the i newspaper that on Sunday, when a lot of people had come in for a nice quiet pub lunch, some children were making “a lot of noise… it was just bad for all the rest of the people eating”.
“Other tables were complaining because they were shouting and screaming,” she added, “it was just ghastly.”
The new policy has divided punters.
One recent Trip advisor review reads: “We visited you a few years ago with a very polite and quiet 7 year old and didn't see the unwelcoming signs regarding children until after we had ordered food.
“My daughter read the signs and wanted to leave but I assured her they were just a warning to children who might misbehave. The staff and some of the guests soon made it perfectly clear that even a quiet child was unwelcome.”
However another reviewer said “The fact that you have 'temporarily' not allowed children is a big plus for us,” and another added that ‘the recent decision to go "Adults Only" is interesting, and no doubt some will not like [it] but given that most parents think their offspring can do no wrong maybe it is time for more places to do similar.”
One observant punter pointed out that while the policy wasn’t a terrible one the pub’s ford menu might eeed updating because it “still featured kids’ meals”.
