Top doc Professor Chris Whitty and fellow medic Sir Patrick Vallance have warned Brits about the recent surge in coronavirus cases across the UK.

Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance addressed the nation on Monday and warned the UK the country is on the grip of a second wave – but it is not too late if Brits follow advice.

Sir Vallance said he believes, like Spain and France, the UK will see a rise in cases and therefore, "sadly," a rise in deaths.

He added all age groups have seen a rise in the number of cases, and the surge is not limited to one group, which is not a result of more testing, but more infection.

Brits were then warned about "how quickly" the virus can move and at the moment coronavirus is "doubling every 7 days."

If this continues, he adds, the UK will end up with an estimate of 50,000 cases per day, "which could result in 200 deaths a day."

It comes as Boris Johnson’s government faces fresh criticm for the delay in giving the green light for the initial Covid-19 lockdown in March.

Official emails show Sir Patrick "argued stronger than anyone for action for lockdown" only to get a "telling off" from the chief medical officer.

Pubs and restaurants were not forced to close until 20 March and a full lockdown followed three days later on 23 March.

Brits were confined to their homes until July, and the government swiftly implemented a Eat Out To Help Out scheme to get Brits spending cash again.

Eat Out To Help Out was extremely successful in generating a much-needed boost for the hospitality sector but has been criticised for the recent spike in cases.

Mr Whitty and Sir Vallance said the UK is now "heading in the wrong direction" at a "critical point" in the pandemic.

He added: "We are looking at the data to see how to manage the spread of the virus ahead of a very challenging winter period."

A Downing Street source said: :Infection rates are going up, we are in the grip of a second Covid wave and we’re now in the last-chance saloon.

"The Chief Scientific Adviser and Chief Medical Officer will set out the latest data and the stark reality we’re now facing."

Potential worse-case scenarios were also laid out by the top docs, and it is likely the UK could face another three-month lockdown.
