The former US President had planned an appearance as the keynote speaker at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. However, his address was slashed after park commissioners began to suspect there was a political motive behind it, according to an NBC 15 News report.
Commission chairman Bill Tunnell told the news outlet: “After the request was made, then there was contact with the Republican Party, they contacted us and then it became apparent that it was going to be a partisan political event, rather than just a patriotic event planned for that evening.”
The park had previously hosted political events, but the commission’s stance on partisan events changed when presidential candidate Rick Santorum held a rally there in 2012.
Mr Tunnell added: “Rick Santorum was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
“And that’s when the commission went to the no partisan politics open to the public.”
But this year’s decision to axe Mr Trump’s appearance sparked debate on Twitter.
One user wrote: “They could move the rally to the garbage dump where it belongs.”
Another person added: “Absolutely. Maybe if he paid his previous bill it might be different.
“But, no, he is a grifter and keeps spreading his lies.”
A third commenter said: “Absolutely. It’s not a 4th of July celebration.
“It will be Trump still whining about losing the election.
“In other words a partisan event.”
