The ‘best UFO image ever’ was kept out of the public eye by “dark forces” in the government fighting to keep it a secret.
Two chefs walking in the highlands took photographs of a ship nothing like anything they'd seen before – but despite taking them to the papers the pictures, and the identities of the men, dropped off the face of the Earth.
Now a secret copy of the picture has been released by former RAF officer Craig Lindsay, who had taken a copy after he spoke to the two chefs at the time and before he sent the scans off to the Ministery of Defence.

While the public may only now be getting its first look at the image, civil servants at the MoD have known about the Calvine files for years.
In 2020, Nick Pope, who worked for the Ministry of Defence for 21 years and ran its UFO project from 1991 to 1994 said he was desperate for the images to be released.
He inherited the case from another officer and was staggered to discover that the MoD hadn’t been able to track or trace the ‘ship’ in any way.
He still isn’t allowed to discuss the full details of the investigation as he is still bound by the Official Secrets Act.
Writing in the Sun, he said: “This was unprecedented and suggested that someone inside the MoD had sabotaged the investigation and blocked the UFO project from getting to the truth. Dark forces were at work.”
He said he was blown away by the image, which “was up-close-and-personal, had been taken in broad daylight, and showed a large diamond-shaped craft.”

He revealed that MoD analysis indicated that the ship was around 100 feet in diameter, but, the images “showed a structured craft of unknown origin, unlike any conventional aircraft. There was no fuselage, no wings, no tail, no engines and no markings of any sort.”
While the public has always been fascinated by the possibility of life from outer space, it has often been hard to get any information out of official government sources.
But in reality, it seems large parts of the government were working to understand the various sightings and unexplained phenomena – including the Calvine files which, for a time, featured in a huge blown-up image on a wall at the MoD.
Nick said: “We consistently played down the true level of our interest in UFOs, telling parliament, the media and the public that the subject was of little interest, while all the time, behind closed doors, we struggled to make sense of cases like the Calvine incident.”
At one point they were briefed on Calvine by a ‘spook’ from the Defence Intelligence Staff.
“He said the object in the photograph wasn’t Russian,” Nick recalls. “He said it wasn’t American. He looked at us intently and said that only left one other possibility.”
At this point, the spook is understood to have pointed up at the sky.

Nick said that at the MoD “a sceptic versus believer dogfight was raging”, between those who thought the image was a UFO and those who thought it was something more worldly.
Of the theories amongst the sceptics, one of the most common was the belief that it was the top-secret and never confirmed US Aurora project, which was designed to replace the Blackbird spy plane.
Members of the MoD of course took it to their collages across the pond to ask if they had been running operations over the UK.
They were told in no uncertain terms that they had not and that Aurora didn’t exist.
They asked again.
“The Secretary of the Air Force, Donald Rice, was ‘incensed’ by the questioning and the implication that he’d lied to the US Congress when he told them Aurora didn’t exist,” Nick wrote.
After the row the case went cold, with the big picture on the wall even rumoured to have been put through a shredder – no definitive answer was ever found for Calvine.
