Woman stabbed husband 140 times and bludgeoned him to death with cleaver

A woman has been charged with murder after she allegedly stabbed her disabled husband 140 times, according to police.

Joan Burke, 61, from Florida, who is being held without bond, is also said to have pounded her husband, Melvin Weller, 62, on the head with a meat cleaver.

He was allegedly found laying in a pool of blood by his step son, who had just arrived home from work, before he called the police.

Palm Springs Police officers arrived at the house in the southern state on the evening of February 11 to find the body and the blood that covered more than half the kitchen floor, according to court documents obtained by CNN affiliate WPTV.

Investigators also found a mop, a broom and other cleaning tools next to the body.

When asked by the 911 dispatcher if anyone else was at home at the time, the caller "paused for several seconds and then said his mother Joan Burke was there," the aforementioned report stated.

When officers arrived, they noticed blood splatters and smears on the walls, cabinets, and counters of the kitchen. A pair of knives and a meat cleaver were found in the kitchen sink, police said.

Police also found the accused laying silently in bed but not sleeping, before she was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

An autopsy revealed the victim suffered more than 140 stab wounds. It also revealed that he suffered a skull fracture caused by a blow to the head with a meat cleaver.

A garbage bag containing a blood-stained nightgown belonging to the suspect was found, as was a mobile phone linked to him.

Police said Burke was also found to have lacerations on her hands.
