A massive emergency service presence has been spotted at Stansted Airport after a Kenya Airways flight was diverted.

The passenger plane had been travelling from Nairobi to the UK earlier today and was escorted by members of the police following its landing just before 3.45pm today (Thursday, October 12).

The flight was due to land in London Heathrow but was instead intercepted and forced to land at Stansted Airport. The massive Boeing 787 was met by Essex Police who were on the runway to help bring the flight in.

A London Stansted spokesperson has confirmed the plane, which was escorted by an RAF jet, "landed safely with Essex Police in attendance".

Further confirmation from the spokesperson confirmed the "incident has been stood down and the airport is open and flights are operating as normal."

"The crew onboard were briefed, and all safety and security precautions were taken to ensure the safety and security of our crew and passengers on board." They confirmed in the same statement the aircraft had "landed safely" at Stansted airport.
