The eyes of the world are on the new Argentinian president-elect and on whether he will fulfil all the promises he made during the electoral campaign.

Among the pledges made by politician Javier Milei over the past few weeks was that he would only count as his allies “free world” and capitalist nations.

China and Brazil, he vowed last week, would no longer be among Argentina’s partners if he was elected.

Speaking at a meeting hosted by CICyP, a group representing businesses and production across the American continent, Mr Milei said: “I am going to be aligned with the United States, Israel and the free world. I don’t want to have anything to do with the communists.

“That does not mean that, as private companies, they cannot trade with China or Brazil. But I am not going to be allied with them.”

While Mr Milei is a self-confessed fan of Donald Trump, he called current US President Joe Biden a “moderate socialist”.

Given his pledge to work only with capitalist countries, a collaboration with Mr Biden could be seen as a contradiction.

Don’t miss… Diana Mondino, an economist elected on the weekend and appointed by Mr Milei as his foreign policy representative, has been dialling down the far-right politician’s pledges weeks before his victory.

Seemingly trying to reassure international observers Mr Milei’s government would continue to work with Beijing, she previously said: “China is one of our most important partners; it was for a long time and I hope it will continue to be for a long time.”

Over the weeks, Ms Mondino has tried to provide a more moderate spin to other Mr Milei’s views.
