The eyes of the world are on the new Argentinian president-elect and on whether he will fulfil all the promises he made during the electoral campaign.
Among the pledges made by politician Javier Milei over the past few weeks was that he would only count as his allies “free world” and capitalist nations.
China and Brazil, he vowed last week, would no longer be among Argentina’s partners if he was elected.
Speaking at a meeting hosted by CICyP, a group representing businesses and production across the American continent, Mr Milei said: “I am going to be aligned with the United States, Israel and the free world. I don’t want to have anything to do with the communists.
“That does not mean that, as private companies, they cannot trade with China or Brazil. But I am not going to be allied with them.”

Referring to the Southern Common Market, commonly known by the abbreviation Mercosur, the populist also said: “On the trade issue, I consider that Mercosur has failed brutally and failed to move beyond an imperfect customs union.”
After the November 19 vote in Argentina, Mr Milei will be given the chance to show whether he truly wants to break ties with two of his country’s largest trading partners.
But his pledge to work with the US may have been endangered by some of the politician’s previous statements. While Mr Milei is a self-confessed fan of Donald Trump, he called current US President Joe Biden a “moderate socialist”.
Given his pledge to work only with capitalist countries, a collaboration with Mr Biden could be seen as a contradiction.

Diana Mondino, an economist elected on the weekend and appointed by Mr Milei as his foreign policy representative, has been dialling down the far-right politician’s pledges weeks before his victory.
Seemingly trying to reassure international observers Mr Milei’s government would continue to work with Beijing, she previously said: “China is one of our most important partners; it was for a long time and I hope it will continue to be for a long time.”
Over the weeks, Ms Mondino has tried to provide a more moderate spin to other Mr Milei’s views.

While he is a climate change denier, Ms Mondino recently argued: “Regardless of whether or not there is anthropomorphic climate change, Argentina can be a great solution with its pastures.”
While the world and Argentina’s historic economic partners await to see which direction Mr Milei’s government will take, the politician was publicly congratulated on his victory by Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro and US former president Mr Trump.
The 45th US president, who will attempt to be re-elected in November next year, said: “The whole world was watching! I am very proud of you. You will turn your country around and truly Make Argentina Great Again.”
