The Met Office has been forced to issue a rare amber-level warning as seven inches of rain could pose a "danger to life" in the UK this weekend.

The national weather agency has said deep and fast-flowing floods, travel chaos and power cuts could happen in the impacted region.

It will come into force from 3am on Saturday (October 7) and last until 6am on Sunday (October 8), covering a large swathe of central and northern Scotland. Glasgow, Stirling and Perth are all impacted.

A yellow-level warning was already in place for much of Scotland, but now the Met Office expects more severe conditions in this specified area. The warning states that 100mm (4in) of rainfall can be expected for most, and that the wettest spots could see as much as 180mm (7in). The rain is expected to start tonight (Friday, October 6), growing more severe on Saturday before easing on Sunday.

People in the impacted area have been told to expect: "Homes and businesses flooded and damage to some buildings. Danger to life from fast flowing or deep floodwater. Delays or cancellations to train and bus services. Spray and flooding leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. Some communities cut off by flooded roads. Power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses."

According to the Met Office website, amber-level warnings are only issued when "there is an increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather". "You should think about changing your plans and taking action to protect yourself and your property," the national weather agency says.

Despite the grim conditions forecast for Scotland, further south temperatures could hit a balmy 27C on Sunday as warm air from the continent moves across England and Wales.
